Cultural-Matched Placements

Providing safety, stability, and cultural understanding when it matters most.

Honouring identity, heritage, and belonging in foster care

At Family Works Fostering, we recognise the importance of a child’s cultural, ethnic, and religious identity. Wherever possible, we promote and encourage culturally matched placements, ensuring that children and young people are supported in ways that reflect who they are and where they come from.

A child’s sense of identity is fundamental to their emotional wellbeing. By carefully considering cultural and religious needs during placement matching, we aim to create environments where children feel understood, respected, and valued.

Why Cultural Matching Matters

Children in care may already be experiencing uncertainty and change. Maintaining connection to their cultural background helps provide:

  • A sense of belonging
  • Continuity and stability
  • Confidence in their identity
  • Respect for their heritage and traditions
  • Emotional security

Culturally matched placements help children grow up with a positive sense of self and pride in their background.

Supporting Children in Transracial Placements

While we prioritise cultural matching wherever possible, there are times when children may be placed in transracial placements due to availability or other needs. In these situations, Family Works Fostering pays particular attention to supporting children who may:

  • Struggle with self-image
  • Experience confusion around identity
  • Develop negative attitudes about their heritage
  • Feel isolated from their cultural community

We ensure that every transracial placement has a clear plan in place to meet the child’s cultural, ethnic, and religious needs. This may include:

  • Access to community groups and cultural events
  • Support in maintaining language or religious practices
  • Education around heritage and identity
  • Ongoing reflective discussions in supervision

Our Approach to Cultural-Matched Placements

Family Works Fostering takes a proactive and thoughtful approach to cultural considerations during placement matching.

We:

  • Carefully assess cultural, religious, and ethnic needs during referral
  • Recruit and support a diverse pool of foster carers
  • Provide training to carers on cultural sensitivity and identity
  • Monitor placements to ensure cultural needs are consistently met
  • Work closely with local authorities and families

This ensures that placements are not only safe and stable but also reflective of each child’s individual needs.

Training and Support for Foster Carers

All Family Works Fostering carers receive guidance and training on:

  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Supporting children’s identity development
  • Understanding the impact of discrimination and racism
  • Promoting diversity and inclusion within the home

We also provide reflective supervision to help carers explore cultural considerations in an open and supportive environment.

Putting Children First

Our priority is always the best interests of the child. Cultural matching is one important factor within a wider assessment of needs, safety, and stability. Where an exact match is not possible, we ensure that strong support systems are in place to help children feel secure and confident in their identity.

By promoting placements that respect culture, ethnicity, and religion, we help children build a stronger sense of who they are — and who they can become.
