Can single people foster?

Yes, single people can absolutely become foster carers. Whether you’re a single parent or a single person without children, we’ll support you in your journey to fostering.

At FW Fostering, we welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds. Whether you’re single, divorced, separated, or widowed, what truly matters is your ability to offer a stable, caring, and safe home for a child who needs one.

Becoming a foster carer is about compassion, commitment, and consistency — not about being in a relationship. We’ll support you every step of the way to make your fostering journey rewarding and successful.

Who We Mean by “Single Person”

At FW Fostering, we define “single” broadly — it includes anyone who is not currently in a relationship or living with a partner. You may be divorced, widowed, or have chosen to live independently — and that’s completely fine.

The key question isn’t whether you’re single, but whether you can provide a nurturing, secure, and understanding environment for a child or young person to grow and thrive.

  • You must have a suitable spare room in your house for the foster child.
  • There is a need to be able to provide close supervision and care to a foster child, as you would for your own child.
  • Be willing to work with us as part of a team of professionals, such as social workers, teachers, doctors, therapists in the best interests of the foster child.
  • The minimum age is 21 years old, we do not have an upper age limit for one to foster a child.
  • You are expected to be healthy enough to manage the care of a child/young person.
  • Do not have any serious convictions or cautions.
  • Be flexible, patient and determined not to give up easily when facing a challenge.

Key Considerations for Single Foster Carers

Being single doesn’t limit your ability to foster, but there are a few practical factors we’ll explore together during your assessment.

1. Availability and Time Commitment

Children in care need consistent attention, stability, and emotional support. We’ll look at your schedule and discuss how fostering can fit into your lifestyle.

2. Support Network

Even if you live alone, it’s important to have a strong support network — friends, family, or neighbours you can rely on for advice or help in emergencies.
At FW Fostering, we also provide 24/7 professional support and connect you with other local foster carers, so you’re part of a community that understands what you’re experiencing.

3. Financial Stability

Fostering is a paid, professional role. You’ll receive a competitive fostering allowance to cover the child’s needs and your time.
During the application, we’ll make sure you’re financially secure so you can focus on providing the best possible care.

4. Home Environment

You don’t need to own your home to foster — renting is fine — but you’ll need a spare bedroom for each child you foster. This gives them privacy and a space of their own to feel safe.

Can a Single Man Foster?

More men than ever are choosing to foster, providing positive male role models for children. What’s most important is your empathy, patience, and ability to communicate — not your gender.

Can a Single Women Foster?

Single women have always played a vital role in fostering. Many bring life experience, resilience, and emotional warmth that make them exceptional carers.

FW Fostering welcomes single carers of all genders, backgrounds, and life experiences.
